Suicide – the act of taking one’s own life.
This word does not appear anywhere in the bible, but the act does…Let’s talk about it.
For years I battled with suicide. I tried so hard to leave this world for fear of what it would do to me. Death was appealing because of the peace I associated with it. It felt as if death would silence the pain and hurt I was experiencing. But I learned, at my most desperate moment, that the appeal of death was a façade. It would simply stop the suffering on earth (the temporary realm) to activate my suffering in the spirit (permanent/primary realm).
You might ask what I mean when I say that. This is what I am saying: The spirit world is the mother/first/main/primary place of our dwelling and being. When God created this world, what we have come to know as land, air, and animals were secondary. The spirit realm was already established. We are spirit beings that inhabit a physical vessel (our bodies). You might wonder how all of this relates to suicide.
Here’s the thing…The world we live in is temporary. What we experience and feel are reactions to temporary circumstances. It is unwise to make a permanent decision that has a permanent impact. Most people do not want to think logically when experiencing emotional, spiritual, or physical pain. We want to make a decision and get it out of the way! But what if your decision doesn’t really get it out of the way? What if your decision makes matters worse? You rather risk it on the unknown?
Whenever suicide becomes an option, take a look at purpose. Those that carry an influential and powerful ministry tend to be bombarded with depression, hurt, and disappointment. It is easier to take away the fishing rod and bait than to remove the fish. Do you see what I’m saying? Why attack the boat when you can just take out the lighthouse?
The bible has a few stories where suicide appears to have taken place (1 Samuel 31: 4-5; 1 Kings 16: 18; Matthew 27:5). But Genesis 1: 27 says that we are created in His image. In His likeness. No creator wants to see His creation destroy themselves. No parent wants to see their child kill themselves.
The Answer is Jesus. Root all that you have in Him. Make Him your most valuable possession. Doing so allows you to be grounded in something that can never be taken from you.
